TLDR: Meta Platforms Inc, the parent company of Facebook, recently released an AI model called LLaMA, which it claims can achieve human-like conversational abilities with much less computing power than other systems. However, to avoid the potential for misuse, Meta is currently only making its AI tools available to vetted researchers and entities affiliated with the government, civil society, and academia under a non-commercial license.

Last week, some users on the online forum 4chan claimed to have leaked the LLaMA model to unauthorized users. Despite these claims, Meta announced on Monday that it will continue to release its AI tools to approved researchers. In a statement, Meta acknowledged that while the model is not accessible to everyone, some people have tried to bypass the approval process. However, Meta believes that its current release strategy strikes a balance between responsibility and openness. No mention of security measures to correct the issue or prevent it from happening in the future...

TLDR: A law requiring employers to audit hiring algorithms for bias in New York City has been delayed until April 15, 2023, to allow the city time to work out details and take public input. However, the law, already watered down from its original iteration, is raising concerns from some advocates that it will be further diluted by business interests. The law prohibits employers from using an “automated employment decision tool” unless it has been audited for bias at least a year before its use, and the result of that audit is made public.

Advocates for workers and experts on AI bias want the final rules to address other categories, such as disability, to broaden the scope of the law beyond job screening tools and to close loopholes that could allow employers to avoid a bias audit. Meanwhile, business lobbyists want the law changed further, arguing that an amendment should be passed to remove any requirement for a bias audit, citing the lack of widely-accepted methods for performing such an audit accurately. The lobbyists are also concerned that audits would only be testing a narrow selection of candidates who have offered information about their race willingly.
