TLDR: Elon Musk has founded a new company called X.AI and is assembling a team of AI experts to compete with OpenAI, as he seeks to build generative AI systems that can produce humanlike writing and realistic imagery.

  • Elon Musk left OpenAI in 2018 to focus on Tesla due to differences with the board over AI safety. Sources claim Musk had disagreements with OpenAI board members and staff over their "choices" regarding AI safety. Musk's departure caused a happy hour among OpenAI employees, according to sources.

  • Musk is said to have secured thousands of high-powered GPU processors from Nvidia for his new project. He has recruited engineers from top AI labs, including DeepMind, and will be competing with OpenAI.

The Big Picture: It will be interesting to see how far X.AI’s research will go considering founder Elon Musk is one of the main proponents for the 6-month pause on AI research more advanced than GPT-4.

TLDR: OpenAI is not currently training GPT-5, its next-generation AI language model, despite recent requests to pause development of AI systems "more powerful than GPT-4" due to safety concerns. Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, clarified that the open letter was "missing most technical nuance" and that the company is not working on GPT-5 and won't for some time.

  • OpenAI is still expanding the capabilities of GPT-4 and considering the safety implications of such work. Altman highlighted that there are other things on top of GPT-4 that have "all sorts of safety issues" that were not mentioned in the open letter.

  • Altman also stated that he does not believe that bigger language models are always better. He thinks that size is a false measurement of model quality, and that we are approaching the limits of LLM size for size's sake. He believes that it is important to focus on rapidly increasing capability and delivering the most capable, useful, and safe models.

TLDR: Google is working on a new search engine, called Magi, that would offer users a more personalized experience and be powered by artificial intelligence technology. The new search engine would keep ads within search results, which are Google's primary source of revenue. It would also feature preselected options for objects to buy and be more conversational.

  • The move is in response to competitors like Bing, which has added AI technology, and OpenAI's ChatGPT. The development comes after Samsung (which has a $3 billion contract with Google) was rumoured to be considering replacing Google with Microsoft's Bing. Apple has a similar contract worth about $20 billion which is up for renewal this year.

  • Google is also exploring various product ideas that involve AI, such as using Google Earth's mapping technology, generating images in Google Image results with GIFI, teaching languages through open-ended AI text conversations with Tivoli Tutor, and enabling users to ask a chatbot questions while browsing the web through Chrome with a new tool called “Searchalong”.
