TLDR: Google executives have been trying to clean up the mess from the company’s announcement of its artificial intelligence engine, Bard, but their efforts to clarify have caused further confusion among the workforce. In an all-hands meeting on 4 March, executives answered questions from Dory, the company’s internal forum, with most of the top-rated issues related to the priorities around Bard.

Jack Krawczyk, the product lead for Bard, said the technology is not search, but a collaborative AI service. The attempt to separate Bard from search appeared to signify a pivot in the initial strategy. Several Google employees told CNBC that the inconsistent answers from executives have led to greater confusion.

TLDR: Romania's prime minister has revealed the world's first AI-powered government aide called "Ion." It is said to interpret the opinions of the country's population and convey them back to the government, allowing ministers to formulate policies that are more in touch with everyday concerns. The bot identifies opinions shared on social media or submitted to a portal and prioritizes their importance, delivering the information back to decision-makers. Ion is expected to one day even be able to propose its original ideas.

The tool allows the government to synthesize large amounts of data about people's concerns in real time, something officials believe is not currently possible without AI. The technology is being touted as a democratic innovation allowing Romanians to influence decision-making at the highest levels of government in real-time without having to wait for elections. However, there are concerns that the algorithm that is used to identify which concerns on social media will be prioritized for decision-making could itself be biased, resulting in biased decision-making.

The Big Picture: An AI political advisor that’s trained on social media? What could go wrong 🙄 Anyone else feeling any deja vu?

TLDR: Google has blocked access to certain news content in Canada in a five-week trial as the country's Senate considers a bill that would force internet companies to pay publishers for displaying links to their stories. These news/media outlets are losing revenue to companies like Google which are increasingly providing answers directly on the search page, reducing the traffic that clicks through to the source of the information. Governments in Australia, Britain, and Spain have also proposed laws that aim to extract money from Silicon Valley and direct it to local media companies.

Search engines are becoming better at displaying information without referring visitors to external sources and even circumventing paywalls. According to Semrush, about a quarter of desktop Google searches now end with no onward clicks. Integration of AI chatbots such as Bard and Bing promises to improve this capability which would reduce the amount of click through to news websites taking away even more revenue from the news/media outlets. The chief counsel of a large media company believes AI search companies should license the content they use, as Spotify pays record labels to play their songs, and publishers' complaints about platforms seem increasingly justified.

TLDR: Apple has blocked an update to BlueMail, an email app that uses OpenAI's GPT-3 language model due to concerns that it could generate inappropriate content for children. The app-review team asked BlueMail to move up its age restriction to 17 and older or include content filtering, which the company claims to already have in place. The app's current age restriction is set for users four years old and older. The rejection highlights how Apple may scrutinize apps with ChatGPT functionality in the same way it does others with concerns about the user experience and appropriate nature of the content or service provided by the app.

TLDR: Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, has resigned from the board of OpenAI as his venture capital firm, Greylock Partners, invests in more AI companies, including those that use OpenAI's products. In a LinkedIn post, Hoffman expressed his belief that the impact of AI will be on a greater magnitude and urged for the development of AI technologies that transcend individual applications, companies, and industries.
