TLDR: Google is launching an AI-powered chatbot named Bard, built on their existing large language model LaMDA, with the aim to combine the world's knowledge with the intelligence of large language models. CEO Sundar Pichai wants the AI services to be responsible but did not mention how Bard would prevent sharing harmful content other than referencing their 2018 AI Principles.

Initially, Bard will operate on a lighter version of LaMDA for more people to use. The launch follows speculation that Microsoft is bringing another AI chatbot, ChatGPT, to its search engine Bing. Pichai stated that people are using Google search to ask more nuanced questions requiring synthesizing insights, and soon AI-powered features in Search will distill complex information into easy-to-digest formats.

In addition to this, Google will host a 40-minute virtual event on YouTube on February 8th at 8:30 AM Eastern Time, to showcase how it plans to utilize artificial intelligence to transform the way people search, access, and engage with information, making it more effortless and user-friendly to find what they need.

TLDR: With Google finally announcing its own highly anticipated response to the AI world, Microsoft and OpenAI are getting ready to make some waves of their own. The company is holding an important news event today (February 7th) and has just officially confirmed the in-person gathering at its Redmond headquarters. With the event kicking off at 10AM PT / 1PM ET, speculation is rampant about what the tech giant has in store. The rumours suggest that the focus of the event could be on the game-changing integration of the widely popular ChatGPT into Bing and Microsoft's expanding partnership with OpenAI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella look like they’ve got some spicy new stuff to share so keep an eye out for breaking news.

The Big Picture: Here we are folks. The AI wars are heating up in a major way. Will Google dominate the AI chatbot space like it dominated the search engine space so many years ago, leaving Bing to fall into obscurity once again and Microsoft-OpenAI to reevaluate their life choices? Or will Bing come in hot and take over the top spot? Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z.

TLDR: A new research paper co-authored by Microsoft researchers suggests that Microsoft Excel may get an AI assist in the form of FLAME, a T5-based model trained on Excel formulas. The researchers claim that FLAME is more efficient and cost-effective compared to other existing solutions and can outperform larger language models in certain settings.

The primary purpose of FLAME is to help Excel users with formulas, providing autocomplete suggestions and repairing malformed formulas. It is not clear when or if FLAME will become available to the general public, but the recent announcement of Microsoft's investment in OpenAI suggests AI could be integrated into more Microsoft products in the future. You can find the full paper here.

The Big Picture: More companies are looking to integrate AI into their operation to increase efficiency and maximize their profits. Optimizing data analysis may well be one of the first steps in doing so. With FLAME on the scene, data science might be getting a whole lot hotter 😉.

TLDR: EQT is a leading global investment firm that invests in technology, healthcare, real estate, and infrastructure businesses. With 10 business lines including venture capital, private equity, and public-market investments, EQT is a data-driven company that values both personal relationships and AI tools in its dealmaking process.

In 2016, EQT launched Motherbrain, an AI platform hosted on the Google Cloud Platform that uses proprietary databases containing hundreds of millions of data points to generate lists of promising companies for EQT investors. Since its launch, Motherbrain has been a game-changer for EQT, helping the venture team source at least 15 deals, including two deals valued at over $1 billion.

With the advent of ChatGPT, EQT is taking its AI capabilities to the next level. By putting the power of AI directly into the hands of its investors and portfolio companies, ChatGPT is enabling more open-ended questions and reducing communication logjams between the data science and deal-making teams.

EQT's long-term goal is to train Motherbrain to capture the way investors think, making the AI smarter and EQT's dealmakers more confident in their investments. The data generated by the deal professionals is also contributing to EQT's data moat, making it a company at the forefront of AI in the investment world.

The Big Picture: AI is is quickly optimizing the way that investments are made. Many firms are finding that deals can be made more quickly and efficiently and are seeing immense growth, such as the investment fund powered by IBM's Watson supercomputer. Operations are getting better as communications between data managers and deal makers improve. Soon, the whole operation will be one big AI-powered machine.
