TLDR: Facebook's parent company Meta has developed LLaMA, a new AI-powered language model that can engage in human-like conversations like other chatbots, but with better efficiency and fewer hardware requirements. It reportedly outperforms other models, including GPT-3 from OpenAI, despite being 10 times smaller in size. Meta is also claiming that LLaMA can be trained exclusively using publicly available datasets.

Meta is currently only releasing LLaMA to the research community, with the aim of gathering feedback from experts. The release of the model is seen as an attempt to improve the quality of AI-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, which have been criticized for their factual errors and biases. The move could help Meta to gain more traction in the highly competitive AI market.

TLDR: OpenAI says its mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity while minimizing the risks of misuse and accidents. AGI has the potential to elevate humanity by increasing abundance, turbocharging the global economy, and aiding in the discovery of new scientific knowledge. Still, it also comes with serious risks of societal disruption.

In this recent post, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the company wants to empower humanity to maximize the benefits of AGI while ensuring that access and governance of AGI are widely and fairly shared. In the short term, this means gradual, real-world testing of increasingly complicated and powerful systems to allow users and policymakers to provide feedback. Ultimately, this is meant to allow for a societal agreement on the wide bounds and limits that should be imposed on AGIs.

To achieve its mission, OpenAI plans to create increasingly aligned and steerable models while running experiments for external input, using AI to help humans monitor and evaluate the outputs of more complex models. The company states that it is becoming increasingly cautious with the creation and deployment of its models as they get closer to AGI.

OpenAI believes that progress on AI safety and capabilities must be made together, and it wants society to agree on extremely wide bounds of how AI can be used, but within those bounds, individual users have a lot of discretion.

The Big Picture: They can talk the talk but will they be able to walk the walk? This statement comes after they received criticism from many, including OpenAI founder Elon Musk, regarding their decision to essentially make OpenAI a closed-source, for-profit company through their partnership with Microsoft. Additionally, tech giants like Google and Microsoft have been swaying the EU to ease regulations and restrictions on general-purpose AI.

TLDR: Bank of America and Goldman Sachs have followed JPMorgan in prohibiting staff from using ChatGPT for business purposes due to concerns over the potential risks involved with its use, including the model making mistakes or plagiarising someone else’s work. This comes after Microsoft warned its own employees against sharing sensitive information with the chatbot last month. ChatGPT could also be used to write computer code, but banks are unlikely to allow it near their coding languages or systems due to privacy concerns and the low tolerance for failure in banking systems.

The intellectual content provided by traders, investment bankers, and research analysts is a major selling point in the industry, and the use of ChatGPT could reduce its value as investors pay banks for their unique insights and expertise. The compliance departments are worried about the risks involved, particularly after being fined by regulators for bankers’ use of WhatsApp, and the potential for a sell-side analyst’s research report to contain plausible but entirely fictitious sectoral developments threatening or benefiting a listed company.
