TLDR: Yesterday, Microsoft announced the next step of integration of Open-AI’s GPT-4 into their suite of tools with 365 Copilot.

  • Copilot is a new AI-powered tool that combines large language models (LLMs) with business data and Microsoft 365 apps to enhance workplace productivity.

  • The tool is an entirely new way of working that offers two main experiences.

    • Firstly, it is integrated into Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.

    • Secondly, it offers an entirely new experience called Business Chat, which uses natural language prompts to generate status updates based on a customer's emails, chats, meetings, and contacts.

  • The Copilot is designed to assist users in generating documents, emails, presentations, and more, using GPT-4 from OpenAI. It will appear in the sidebar as a chatbot, allowing users to summon it to generate text in documents, create PowerPoint presentations based on Word documents, or help use features like PivotTables in Excel.

  • Copilot is currently being tested by a small group of select users from 20 different companies including 8 in the Fortune 500 before it is rolled out to the public.

  • Like all tools based on GPT and other LLMs, Copilot won't always be correct, but it is definitely an upgrade from looking at a blank screen with a blinking cursor trying to figure out how to start.

TLDR: Baidu unveiled its AI-powered chatbot called Ernie Bot today. The presentation was an hour long and only showed brief videos of Ernie carrying out mathematical calculations, speaking in Chinese dialects, and generating videos and images with text prompts.

  • Investors were disappointed with the pre-recorded video demonstrations and lack of a public launch, causing a 6.4% drop in shares and a $3 billion market valuation loss.

  • During the presentation at Baidu's Beijing headquarters, CEO Robin Li cautioned that Ernie Bot is not perfect, but it was unveiled because of market pressure.

  • Ernie Bot will be available for trial to an initial group of users with invitation codes, while companies can apply to embed the bot into their products via Baidu's cloud platform.

  • Baidu prioritizes access to Ernie Bot for 650 ecosystem business partners, including media companies, banks, and car firms. Users of its AI cloud can apply for access to Ernie Bot's API. Within an hour of the announcement, Baidu announced that 30,000 corporate clients had joined the waitlist for access to the chatbot.

  • Kai Wang, an analyst from Morningstar, said that the presentation was more of a scripted monologue than an interactive session and there was no soft launch date, leading to negative sentiments.

TLDR: The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer delivered his Spring Budget to the House of Commons, laying out his fiscal plans for the next financial year.

  • The government revealed a quantum strategy to become a world-leading quantum-enabled economy by 2033 with a research and innovation program totalling £2.5 billion. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology will play an essential role in delivering the commitments.

  • The UK government will also allocate £900 million towards the creation of a new exascale supercomputer and a dedicated AI Research Resource to bolster the competitiveness of UK developers.

  • Exascale computing is a new milestone, meaning a computer can perform over one quintillion simple calculations per second.

  • The development is particularly helpful for researchers who need the significant computing power of such technologies to train intricate AI models, create medications, address climate change issues, and perform other similar tasks.
