TLDR: Microsoft is allegedly threatening to cut off access to its internet-search data if rival companies don't stop using it as the basis for their own artificial intelligence chat products.

  • Microsoft licenses its Bing search index data to other companies that offer web search, such as Yahoo and DuckDuckGo. In recent months, AI chatbots have become increasingly popular and some customers are using the index to feed their AI chat tools.

  • The customers remain unnamed but note that DuckDuckGo recently launched DuckAssist, while You.com and Neeva have also recently debuted the AI-fueled searches YouChat and NeevaAI, respectively. It seems that Microsoft's threat could potentially affect some major companies that rely on Bing search index data.

  • Ironically, despite the lawsuits being brought against OpenAI from artists whose work has gone uncredited, Microsoft seems to be taking a strong stance to protect its intellectual property and prevent competitors from using its data to build competing products.

The Big Picture: The dispute highlights the increasing potential for data licensing agreements to become contentious pain points in the B2B data-selling space as companies seek to protect their intellectual property and competitive advantage. It also underscores the power that large technology companies like Microsoft have in the market, as they can leverage their data and intellectual property to gain an edge over smaller competitors.
