OpenAI and Anthropic release new models
Plus Alexa gets an AI revamp
Today’s Highlights:
📰 News: OpenAI releases GPT-4.5 + Anthropic releases Claude 3.7
💰 Funding: Anthropic raises $3.5Bn Series E
⚡️ Top News Stories:
1. OpenAI has released GPT-4.5 (code-named Orion), its largest model to date, focusing on deeper world knowledge, improved conversational abilities, and emotional intelligence rather than reasoning.
The model reduces hallucinations and enhances accuracy, making it well-suited for creative work, professional tasks, and general queries, though it shows no major improvements in math or science.
Initially available only to Pro users and developers on paid plans, GPT-4.5 will roll out to Plus and Team users next week.
The model is expensive to run, with API pricing set at $75 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens, significantly higher than previous OpenAI models.
2. Anthropic has launched Claude 3.7 Sonnet, the first "hybrid reasoning" AI model, allowing users to toggle between standard responses and an extended thinking mode with transparent step-by-step reasoning.
The model features a "visible scratchpad" to show its thought process, enabling transparency while balancing trust and safety considerations.
Claude 3.7 Sonnet excels in complex problem-solving tasks, including coding, mathematics, and physics, outperforming previous models and competitors in various benchmarks.
Claude 3.7 Sonnet achieves state-of-the-art performance on real-world coding and agentic tasks, outperforming OpenAI’s o3-mini and o1 models on SWE-Bench and TAU-Bench benchmarks.
Anthropic has also introduced Claude Code, an AI-powered coding assistant capable of autonomously reading, editing, and testing code via the command line, currently in a limited research preview.
3. Amazon has unveiled Alexa+, a revamped AI-powered digital assistant designed for more conversational, personalized, and autonomous task management.
Alexa+ can connect to multiple LLMs, including Amazon’s Nova and Anthropic’s Claude, dynamically selecting the best model for each task.
The assistant can perform a wide-range of complex agentic tasks including managing smart home devices, making reservations, providing entertainment, summarizing complex topics, and engaging in natural conversations on virtually any subject.
4. OpenAI is integrating its Sora video-generation tool into ChatGPT while also developing a dedicated mobile app and a new image generator aimed at surpassing DALL-E 3.
5. Apple’s major Siri overhaul has been delayed until at least 2027, as Apple engineers work to merge legacy and AI-powered Siri architectures while facing challenges with chip shortages and talent retention.
6. ElevenLabs has launched Scribe, a speech-to-text model that outperforms Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash and OpenAI’s Whisper v3, supporting 99 languages with over 95% accuracy in more than 25, including English, Italian, and Spanish, while excelling in underrepresented languages like Serbian, Cantonese, and Malayalam.
💰 Top Funding News:
1. Anthropic raised a $3.5Bn Series E round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures.
The substantial investment will bolster Anthropic's efforts in developing next-generation AI systems, expanding computational resources, and accelerating global expansion, following the successful launch of Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code.
2. TSMC has pledged a $100Bn investment in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing over the next four years, bringing its total U.S. investment to $165 billion, with new Arizona facilities dedicated to AI chip production.
