TLDR: OpenAI has developed a tool that identifies the behavior of neurons in large language models (GPT-2 in this case) through natural language explanations produced and scored by GPT-4.
It generates explanations for all 307,200 neurons in GPT-2 and scores each explanation based on how well it matches the actual neuron's behavior.
The dataset and tool code are open-sourced on GitHub, and the interpretability research aims to scale with the pace of AI development to create more intelligent and trustworthy models. The methodology runs three steps on each neuron, including generating an explanation using GPT-4, simulating the neuron's behavior, and scoring the explanation.
The researchers acknowledge that the tool has a long way to go before it's genuinely useful, as most of the explanations scored poorly. However, it could be used to improve LLMs' performance, cut down on bias or toxicity, and allow researchers to develop new techniques for generating higher-scoring explanations.
The Big Picture: This research shines a light on the “black box” of AI. The inner mechanisms of many systems remain a mystery and pose one of the biggest problems for AI alignment. But this news represents a major step forward in understanding LLMs and solving the problems hindering AI progress.
