OpenAI and Snap announce new safety measures for AI

TLDR: A day after President Biden met with his Council of Advisors on Science and Technology regarding AI advances and the need for regulation, OpenAI and Snap announced measures related to their efforts towards safety and responsible use.

  • OpenAI released a statement asserting that it prioritizes safety in its AI models, with over six months of rigorous testing before releasing GPT-4 and exploring verification options to enforce age requirements.

  • OpenAI emphasized the importance of learning from public input to make its models safer and promised details about its approach to safety while reaffirming its commitment to collaboration with policymakers and stakeholders in the AI community.

  • However, critics argue that OpenAI's safety pledge was light on specific details about how it plans to mitigate risk, enforce policies, or work with regulators.

  • Snapchat also launched new AI chatbot safety measures, including an age filter and insights for parents, to prevent reported inappropriate communication and attempts to trick the chatbot and ensure the chatbot's responses align with their guidelines.

  • The age filter informs the chatbot of users' birth dates, and the parental control feature enables guardians to monitor kids' interactions with the chatbot.

TLDR: Meta announced plans to commercialize its proprietary generative AI by December 2023, competing with Google in finding practical applications for the technology.

  • This is Meta’s first indication of timelines for commercialization since February when it announced it would establish a new organization to develop generative AI.

  • Yesterday, Meta also released the Segment Anything Model (SAM), which can identify objects in images and videos even if it has not encountered them before, using text prompts or by clicking, making it easier to pick out individual objects from within an image.

TLDR: Google has released new information on its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips, which it uses for over 90% of its work in artificial intelligence training. The TPU has a faster and more power-efficient design than Nvidia Corp's comparable systems.

  • Google has strung together over 4,000 of the TPU chips for more efficient training of models. The connections between chips have become a key point of competition among companies that build AI supercomputers. Google is reportedly working on a new TPU that would compete with Nvidia's H100.

TLDR: Amazon Web Services has launched a 10-week accelerator program for generative AI startups globally, offering AWS credits of up to $300,000, and access to AI models and custom go-to-market advice.

  • Although Amazon Web Services has struck partnerships with AI firms like Stability AI and Hugging Face, it will not directly invest in the 10 selected startups as it does not yet have an AI/ML investment arm.
