📰 Today's Top Stories

TLDR: Runway specializes in web-based video editing tools that use AI, such as background removal and pose detection. The company has announced the 2nd generation of their text-to-video AI generation model.

  • Runway's first AI video editing model, Gen-1, was announced in February and focused on transforming existing video footage.

  • Gen-2, on the other hand, aims to generate videos from scratch although the demo clips shared by Runway are short, unstable, and not photorealistic… yet.

  • Users will have to sign up for a waitlist via Runway's Discord for Gen-2 access.

The Big Picture: This is a huge step forward for multi-modal generative AI models. Audio-visual content creation is already being revolutionized by models like Midjourney and ElevenLabs and now users can generate entire videos from scratch simply by inputting a text description.

TLDR: OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania conducted a study on the impact of GPT models on the US workforce.

  • The study found that 80% of workers could have at least 10% of their tasks impacted by GPTs, with 19% seeing at least 50% of their tasks impacted.

  • The researchers used the O*NET database to determine the tasks to measure for each occupation and collected human and GPT-4 generated annotations to determine if GPT could reduce the time required for a human to perform a specific task by at least 50%.

  • GPT exposure is greater for higher-income jobs but spans almost all industries. Occupations with the highest exposure to GPT include tax preparers, writers, web designers, accountants, journalists, and legal secretaries.

  • The current limitations of LLMs mean that jobs with a STEM focus and critical thinking focus are the least exposed.

  • GPT models are already becoming a commonly used tool, with Google and Microsoft incorporating AI into their office and enterprise products, and startups using GPT-4 for coding to reduce costs on human developers.

TLDR: Roblox has launched two new AI tools to support developers on its platform: AI-based material generation and coding tools.

  • The material generation tool can create high-quality textures for in-game objects and apply texture to make lighting more realistic.

  • The AI code assist tool allows users to create code through natural language prompts and can summarize users' code to create comments.

  • These tools are designed for all Roblox players, including those with no coding experience.

  • Roblox aims to become a creative and productive game-development tool for everyone.

TLDR: Last week, a Stanford research team trained their own language model, called Alpaca, using Meta's open-source LLaMA 7B language model and 52,000 sample conversations generated using OpenAI's API, with a total cost less than $600 in total.

  • Alpaca was tested against ChatGPT and won 90 out of 179 tests across various domains such as email writing, social media, and productivity tools.

  • The team has released the code and questions used in the research on Github, but notes that the model has not been fine-tuned for safety and ethics issues.

  • The ease and low cost of creating and training language models raise concerns about uncontrolled use by individuals with machine learning knowledge who may not care about terms and conditions or software piracy.

The Big Picture: If the wrong people realize that creating language models might be relatively easy and affordable, we might be seeing a lot of unsafe LLMs soon. As AI advances relentlessly, so too does the potential for immense harm.

TLDR: Nuance Communications has launched Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express, a clinical documentation application that uses conversational and ambient AI technology, along with OpenAI's newest model, GPT-4, to create draft clinical notes in seconds.

  • DAX Express is aimed at reducing administrative burden and allowing clinicians to spend more time with patients.

  • DAX Express builds on the success of DAX, which is currently used by hundreds of healthcare systems and is designed to provide an accessible entry point for healthcare organizations to adopt AI-powered applications at scale.
